Every day, the vehicle parc size is growing around the world. According to Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles (OICA) aka International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, in 2017, the total 70,849,466 light vehicles were added to the total parc size. Furthermore, the current fad is that people are travelling in their own vehicle to work. This further increases the traffic congestion and the requirement for the space to keep their vehicle idle when the driver or the vehicle user is working for his/her full time job. This further suggest that most of the time is being spent by keeping the vehicle idle. So there is a requirement for the parking space when a vehicle is kept idle. In addition, it is very difficult for a driver to identify the parking space in the dense area because of mass mobility. This further lead to crowded streets and increase in the stress levels of driver behind the wheels.
Inside the city during peak hours identifying a free available parking space is very tedious task. The rush during the peak hours to find a parking space further contributes to the carbon emission. There is a need to develop a solution which help drivers to park their vehicles effectively without any hassle.
In this course of eventuality, if the driver who is passing through the empty parking space, is able to update other drivers looking for the available parking space, this will change the complete scenario. This will completely remove the hassle of looking for the empty parking space. Furthermore, it will reduce the driver stress level and carbon emission. But to develop this type of solution, the drivers passing by needs to match with other drivers looking for the empty parking space or in other scenario, the driver searching for the empty parking space should be matched with the current availability. This will completely change the current scenario of manually searching for the empty parking space lane by lane.
Mercedes and Bosch are together working on the concept called community based parking. The concept will help the drivers to find the available parking place, it will reduce the congestion on road, pollution from vehicle and save the useful time in finding parking place. The collaboration is focusing on extracting the data from parking sensors of vehicles passing the free parking space or any other vehicle parked near the free parking space. The information from the vehicles is further shared with the drivers looking for parking space. According to Automo analysis, the data will shared on the mobile application developed by the company or it will be displayed on the car dashboard.
The sensors integrated into Mercedes vehicles can scan the side of the roads at a speed of 55 km/h. The grey data acquired by the sensors is further converted into meaningful data with the help of data mining. The data mining helps to differentiate between different available spaces such as exit and entrance. The current system designed by the Mercedes and Bosch collaboration is being tested at Stuttgart.
The system will help the driver to know about the space and the probability to park in that particular road. Once the driver receives the instruction, the satellite navigation system helps the driver to enter the relevant road and check for the available status of parking.
The application developed by Mercedes can only be used on the Mercedes application and on the smartphone or the vehicle infotainment system. The feed will be sent to the driver for his nearest location. The application and sensors also help to find the available parking space in the multi-story building. The data is first sent to the cloud network for further processing and later it is forwarded to the user smartphone application.
The application currently under development is aimed at saving the user fuel and reduce the carbon emission. The sensors under development are able to find different types of parking space available such as angle, parallel and perpendicular.
The developers of the parking application system are expecting that in future the system will generate information in seconds between finding the available parking space and registering in the system to make the driver aware about the nearest spot. According to Automo, the parking application developing companies also need to initially contain data about the cities and towns. The data should be stored in the backend for the application to perform with full efficiency. In addition, the applications should also recognize other people approaching the parking space. At present, the Mercedes is planning to make the data available for the Mercedes users only. We see as not so successful commercialization strategy, as another car rider can utilize the parking space before the Mercedes driver even approaches the exact location. Thus it is important to include other automakers in the communication loop. This will further allow the application to perform with 100% efficiency without generating any errors with respect to the empty parking place.
According to Automo, the company can also come with a unique business proposition to implement the idea in the early phase. The parking assisted application will help the company to realize revenue from different drivers. The application should be made available to the user based on the monthly payment option. As the user daily commute to work and have to face trouble with parking space, this model will make their life easy and provide the company with an additional revenue stream. This will also increase the company brand value and will provide an opportunity to propose its own brand to the other machine drivers.
