A chat tab left open in the background used to keep marking every new message as read within a second, so a message could show a reader who was nowhere near the app — the same person appearing instantly on everything while never replying. Messages now only count as read while that person's window is open and in front of them; anything arriving while they are away waits for them, and clears when they come back.
