The Deliverability Crisis
In 2026, 20% of legitimate marketing emails never reach the inbox (Return Path). Google's and Microsoft's spam filters are more aggressive, and new authentication requirements (DMARC, BIMI) mean sloppy senders get blocked.
Technical Requirements (Non-Negotiable)
1. SPF (Sender Policy Framework)
DNS record that tells receiving servers which IPs can send on your behalf.
2. DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)
Cryptographic signature proving the email wasn't tampered with in transit.
3. DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication)
Policy telling receivers what to do with emails that fail SPF/DKIM. Set to p=quarantine minimum.
4. BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification)
Display your logo in the inbox. Requires DMARC enforcement and a verified logo.
Strategic Best Practices
5. Clean Your List
Remove bounced emails, unengaged contacts (no opens in 6+ months), and spam traps. Quality > quantity.
6. Warm Up New Domains
Start with low volume (50-100/day) and gradually increase. New domains sending 10,000 emails on day one get flagged immediately.
7. Segment by Engagement
Send most frequently to your most engaged subscribers. Gmail watches engagement rates — high engagement = inbox.
8. Avoid Spam Triggers
ALL CAPS, excessive exclamation marks, misleading subject lines, and image-only emails trigger spam filters.
9. Make Unsubscribing Easy
One-click unsubscribe is now required by Gmail. Make it prominent — it's better than spam reports.
10. Monitor Sender Reputation
Use Google Postmaster Tools and Microsoft SNDS to track your domain's reputation.
