Supporting free everlasting battery: The unmet need for wireless sensor network
Wireless Sensors and their network is gaining traction from both developed and developing countries. The wireless sensor market has been growing continuously. With the availability of Internet of Things (IOT) and machine to machine (M2M) communication every sensor or the object will be connected, making, factories and homes smart places to live and work. The sensors will be used to connect and transmit a wide variety of data such as location, weather, movement/motion, temperature, environmental and physiological data, and many more. With the advancement in wireless sensor network, autonomous sensors, smart sensors, sensor nodes, and others for efficient and effective performance, the demand for small and intelligent sensor system is increasing.
The most important challenge that the wireless sensor network faces is the ability to operate autonomously to become autonomous sensors. This challenge is further limited by the lifespan of the battery. When the battery is totally depleted, there is a need to supplant the battery, which causes extensive downtime. Replacing a battery is expensive and the battery waste disposal will further lead to a heavy toll on the environment. In addition, the places where wireless sensor networks, sensor nodes are deployed, it is almost impractical to replace the battery. With the advancement in wireless sensor network, sensor node, autonomous sensors, smart sensors, wireless sensor devices are becoming smaller, which further leads to low power consumption. So, today, very less power is needed to enable the wireless sensor network, but it is required that the network operates for a longer duration. The alternative solution to replace the batteries completely from wireless sensor network is to make use of ambient energy source from the environment such as solar power and many more. It is vital for energy harvesting companies to provide users with effective and efficient solutions. Companies that fail to provide constant uptime will face reputational damage and loss in brand value.
Innovations and structural changes have been the focus of the energy harvesting market over the past decade. There has been a lot of research to increase the life time of wireless sensor network by designing energy efficient protocols. Smart factories and homes are deploying a variety of sensors to receive data in large volumes and of different varieties. Deploying a variety of sensors further increases the complexity in powering the sensor system. Powering the sensor system continuously with appropriate voltage remains a challenge for all energy harvesting technologies. In addition, developing a low cost energy harvesting solution with increased overall efficiency and less complex design remains a challenge for the energy harvesting companies.
To address all the above challenges, there is a need to build an energy harvesting solution to support free everlasting battery. The conservative battery can give vitality to the lifetime of low-control gadgets. In the energy harvesting industry there are many different players who are employing common sources of energy such as mechanical, thermal, light, electromagnetic, natural, human body, and other chemical sources. There is a need to employ solar battery technology for low power applications and integrates the technology with electronic devices, without changing the device area. The solar batteries will allow supply of continuous power over an extended time period to power systems and devices.
