Migrate from Adobe InDesign to Automo

Automo cannot open a native .indd file. In InDesign, export the document as IDML and drop that file here. Automo reads it on your device, and after sign-up it opens in the design editor so you can keep working.

What moves across

  • An IDML file you export from InDesign with File, then Export, then InDesign Markup (IDML)
  • Pages and spreads in that file, with the text frames and images the importer can read
  • Text and images as layers you can keep editing in the design editor

What does not

  • Native .indd files. Automo cannot read them, so export IDML first
  • An exact match for every font, plug-in and effect. Fonts Automo does not have can look different, so check each page
  • Linked files outside the IDML, Creative Cloud Libraries, and preflight or print settings

Export from Adobe InDesign

  1. In InDesign open the document and choose File, then Export, then InDesign Markup (IDML)
  2. Drop the .idml file in the bay on this page. It is read on your device
  3. Create a free Automo account. The layout opens in the design editor so you can check each page and keep working

Questions about moving from Adobe InDesign

Can I drop a native .indd file?

No. Automo cannot read .indd. In InDesign choose File, then Export, then InDesign Markup (IDML), and drop the .idml file instead.

Do my fonts, plug-ins and effects come across?

Not all of them. Text comes across, but fonts Automo does not have may be replaced, plug-in content does not move, and some effects can look different. Check each page after it opens.

Do I need an InDesign license?

Only to export the IDML file. After that you edit the layout in the browser, and Automo never asks for an Adobe login.

Is the file uploaded before I sign up?

No. The teaser reads the file on your device. Nothing is uploaded until you create an account, then the layout opens in the design editor.
