Tapping a narrow tab selects it
With many tabs open, each tab shrinks to its icon and its close button hides until the pointer is on that tab.

With many tabs open, each tab shrinks to its icon and its close button hides until the pointer is on that tab. The hidden button could still be pressed, so a tap on the end half of a tab closed it instead of selecting it, most easily on a touchscreen. A hidden close button now takes no press at all; it works again as soon as it is shown.
