The design editor is noticeably lighter on your machine. It no longer works away in the background when you are not touching it, so laptops stay cooler and quieter with a design open. Dragging elements around the canvas is smooth instead of stuttering, and moving several elements at once no longer slows to a crawl. Arrow keys also keep nudging elements after you have clicked something in a side panel, which previously stopped working until the design was closed and reopened.
